Shalke 04 could be forced to sell their LEC franchise spot

Shalke 04, one of the founding teams of the League of Legends European Championship, may have no choice but to sell their franchise spot as a consequence of their current economic position.

Their German Bundesliga (football) team is in 18th position threatened with relegation after 22 games along with huge debts rising to 200 million euros in recent years.

Shalke 04 are also dealing with the resignation of its former president, who was involved in a health scandal where over 600 people tested positive for COVID-19, over two-thirds of the total workforce.

These are just two of the big hits Shalke 04 has had to face in the last 12 months and unless their Football team starts producing better results and guarantee’s survival in the top flight of the Bundesliga, things are looking dicey for the highly entertaining League of Legends team.

The estimated value of the franchise position is close to 20 million euros according to L’equipe.

Shalke 04 are currently tied in sixth place with 5 wins, 6 losses, while vying for a playoffs spot for a second year in a row.
